Calheta de Nesquim

And the sea? And the wonder of the sea, with the majesty of its fury in days of thunderstorm, with the brightness of its immense blue when, cleared the sky of lead blacks, the sun to everything and everyone involves in clarity of life and joy … And , in this sea, the epic of the white sails of the whaleboats cut, vaporous, light, in the haze of distances.

Dias de Melo, in Mar Rubro

Casas das Pereiras is located south of Pico Island, in the small and picturesque parish of Calheta de Nesquim, 35 km from Pico Airport. Here we can highlight the unique beauty of the landscape and the richness of the historical and cultural heritage, described by Dias de Melo.

It is precisely Rua Professor Dias de Melo, poet and writer who is the Casa das Pereiras, old grocery store, on the ground floor and family residence, on the first floor.

Recently restored by the Pereira family (2018), it is today a space of refinement, privileged for rest and contemplation.

At the core of what Rural Tourism (TER) is, Casas das Pereiras is located in rural areas, where you can admire the maritime and horticultural activity of the local population.

As if it were a museum, it is possible to observe closely the typicity of a rural stone house (uninhabited), with a tank (rainwater tank), a toilet (turned off), a circular stone wall situated on a leveling hill (where knitting and sifting cereals), a fishing boat shelter and a cornfield.

Half-walled walls with the Casa das Pereiras are the religious temple (Church of Calheta de Nesquim), long nave lined with basalt, reserving in the interior the full body image of Bom Jesus dos Milagres. The party in his honor is centennial and takes place every year on August 6. In the churchyard there is the bust of Captain Anselmo da Silveira (1833-1912) founder of whaling on the Island of Pico, in this Parish of Calheta de Nesquim, April 28, 1876.

We invite you to visit Captain Anselmo Square and talk with sea men and former whalers, in a space surrounded by a group of houses of centenary dwellings, a bandstand, cafes, commerce (grocery store) and Museums (Whaleboat House and exhibition private company of the whaler Almerindo Lemos, both free entry).

We suggest the Calheta de Nesquim (PRC11PIC) trail that starts and ends in front of the Church. Following the signs will start a climb along the narrow canada, until you reach the regional road. Turn right and then left you will walk to Rua dos Fetais. To the West you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pedra Aguda and Cabeço do Silvado.

Down to the center, you will pass through canyons covered by incense, and, near the sea, you will walk through vineyards and will pass a whale-watching port, towards the sea.

In the coastal zone, you will find an excellent beach area called Poça das Mujas. Finally, following the Mill of the Mourricão, you will reach the Church again. (This trail is of medium difficulty, with an extension of 8.6 km that will last around 2:30 am).

The two T1 spaces on the ground floor have internal communication, allowing, if necessary, to enlarge the available space.

The T2 villa is protected, of winds and intensity of the sun, by a centenarian meter.
